Winter at Ft. Clatsop
The winter of 1805 was in stark contrast with the previous winter spent with the Mandans. The winter of 1804 had been frigid, but dry. The incessant rains and cloudy skies of Ft. Clatsop made hunting an unpleasant wet chore, rotted meat quickly, made jerking the meat laborious and rendered the preparation of leather from the animal hides tedious at best. The winter of 1804 had included significant trading, smoking, conversations and evening merriment with the trustworthy Mandans. The Ft. Clatsop winter could not have been more dissimilar. Curious?
