Indian Councils

After conducting a full-dress military parade, designed to impress the Indians with the might and splendor of the U.S., Lewis and Clark would meet with native leaders. Under an awning rigged from the keelboat sail and prominently flying the U.S. flag, Lewis and Clark customarily spent hours smoking and conversing with tribal leaders, learning about trading partnerships and attempting to broker peace agreements between hostile tribes.
