Portaging the Great Falls
Intense weather accompanied the travelers as they portaged the Great Falls: scorching heat, raw winds, and fierce cloudbursts. Underfoot the prickly pear pierced their moccasins. Long gone was the romance of adventure and daydreams of any simple path to the Pacific. As the sun darkened their skin to a 'native' hue, exhaustion and pain stalked their every waking hour. Seemingly endless days saw the men maneuvering the boats through torrential downpours and hail that battered and lacerated their muscular lean bodies. Eighteen miles and one month later, the atrocious demoralizing portage was concluded. Curious? More discoveries await in The Lewis & Clark Expedition in an Uncharted Wildernessİ. |
