Sailing up the Missouri
May 14, 1804, the Corps of Discovery, operating under strict military doctrine, set sail from Camp Wood transforming Jefferson's dream into reality. On the best of days, the white canvases of the keelboat and the two piroques were stretched to their limits from a stiff breeze blowing them north and west along the muddy Missouri. Without the assistance of the wind, the boats were laboriously poled, rowed and towed against the stiff current. Around every bend new adventures and challenges awaited the explorers. Discover for yourself some of the wonders Lewis and Clark encountered in The Lewis & Clark Expedition in an Uncharted Wildernessİ. |
