Buffalo
Chips
Survival, a daily concern for the emigrants, depended upon grass for grazing,
water for human and animal consumption and a good supply of fuel for cooking.
While encamped near South Pass, Bernard J. Reid referred to these indispensable
items as "the emigrant's trinity of good things." July 15, 1849As the trail led the pioneers further west, the ample supply of wood they were accustomed to disappeared. They soon learned buffalo chips provided an excellent alternative. "Everyone is busy preparing fires of buffalo chips to cook the evening meal..." Jesse Applegate, 1843 |
