Ft. Vancouver

. Ft. Vancouver, owned by the Hudson Bay Co. and flying the “Union Jack” overhead, was under the command of Dr. John McLoughlin. Known as “White Eagle” by the Indians, McLoughlin stood six feet, four inches tall and had bushy white hair. McLoughlin, an outstanding humanitarian, not only over saw the creation of apple orchards, a sawmill, a school, a library, a theater and churches, but, as a British subject, McLoughlin, also saved the lives of may emigrants. At his command, relief expeditions rescued many stranded wagon trains. Food, clothing, and supplies were dispensed to those in need, often regardless of their ability to pay.
